The 2011 Belle Plaine Tiger volleyball team is not a normal team. They are returning two All-State honorable mention players in Abby Wolpern and Haley Fogarty. Expectations for the Belle Plaine is just as upper as they were last year without winning the Minnesota RiverPrimingand stuff 7-0 in priming play. Their season came to an early end in the Section 2AA North Sub-Section Semifinal in Belle Plaine versus MRC rival Jordan. “Our biggest rencontre will be to increase our defensive effort.” Cassie Wolpern,ThroneCoach One new point of accent for the team this year from second year throne mentor Cassie Wolpern will be defense without seeing the success first hand from priming foes Jordan, LeSueur-Henderson and Mayer Lutheran. Especially without watching the Section 2AA semifinals and final last yearMentorWolpern saw the need to modernize defensively. One player who will be instrumental to that will be second-year libero starter and senior co-captain Lizzie Eischens. “I finger a lot increasingly confident this year than I did last year.” This coming from the team leader in digs last year for the Tigers with 403. Eischens feels well-appointed with her teammates as they return 17 years worth of varsity wits including fifth-year starter and senior co-captain Abby Wolpern and fourth-year starter junior co-captain Haley Fogarty. Fogarty was second on the team last year in kills (259) and set assists (387) and third in digs (191), something that is not that worldwide in volleyball. Abby Wolpern led Belle Plaine last year in worthy (46) was third in kills (216) and second on the team in digs (195). Family moreover runs deep on this team as many players on this year’s team have had older sisters play volleyball for Belle Plaine. It starts with throne mentor Cassie Wolpern and her little sister Abby Wolpern. Haley Fogarty whose older sister Chelsea is playing for Minnesota State University, Mankato. Finally Kirsten Johnson whose older sister Sam was a All-State player last year. Needless to say there is a lot of families playing volleyball in Belle Plaine during holidays. At the end of the day the toughest competition for Belle Plaine will be from the Minnesota RiverPrimingwith four of the eight teams ranked in the preseason rankings. LeSueur-Henderson starts the season ranked second in Class AA, while Belle Plaine comes in fourth, Jordan at eighth and Mayer Lutheran ranked fourth in Class A. Plus Jordan and LSH are both in Section 2AA with Belle Plaine making the section the toughest in Class AA. Add in a tough tournaments in the 32-team Marshall Tournament, Todd Bachmann Invitational at Lakeville North and the season ending Chaska tournament this Belle Plaine team will be wrestle tested when the playoffs start. Finally at the end of the day the mentor and the three captains all stipulate that they expect to compete for a MRC title and Section title, but know they need to work nonflexible to do it and maybe a little increasingly defense. Belle Plaine starts the season at home in a non-conference matchup versus LeSueur-Henderson Tuesday, August 30th at 7:30pm and that game can be heard on Oldies 95.5 FM KRDS.
